The Kestrel 5000 Environmental Meter is a very powerful yet very compact measuring and data logging tool. The Kestrel 5000 provides the same accuracy, reliability and trusted usability as the original Kestrel 4000. Use it for research, safety, expeditions, agriculture and any other profession or activity where accurate on-site condition monitoring is key.
The Kestrel 5 Series platform offers large, high-resolution and contrast displays with easy font readability. It also includes a built-in dual color backlight, extra strong polycarbonate lens, AA battery operation and optional LiNK iOS and Android connectivity and app support. Like all Kestrel meters, the Kestrel 5000 is drop-resistant, dust-resistant, water-resistant and able to withstand harsh environments without damage – so it can travel anywhere you dare to go. Various carry pouch options make it easy for you to carry your Kestrel meter.
In addition to measuring current environmental conditions, the Kestrel 5000 Environmental Meter tracks and logs more than 10,000 time-tagged data sets. Your data logs can be transferred to iOS/Android devices wirelessly with the LiNK wireless communication option and the Kestrel LiNK app, or to Windows/Mac devices with the Kestrel LiNK Dongle accessory or waterproof USB Data Transfer Cable (Both sold separately).
The true versatility of the Kestrel 5000 Environmental Meter becomes apparent with the addition of the Kestrel Vane Mount. This precision-engineered accessory securely mounts the Kestrel 5000 Environmental Meter to a tripod or other or-20. Once installed, the Kestrel 5500 becomes an independent monitoring station, as the large wind vane and precision shaft keep the Kestrel oriented to the wind for continuous measurement and logging of wind speed and all other important weather parameters. The Kestrel LiNK app (iOS and Android) also displays real-time Kestrel readings on the mobile device’s clear and customizable dashboard by providing a remote display that works up to 100′ away (line of sight). The 5,000 meter Kestrel can also be stored and carried in the Vane Mount belt pouch. The kit weighs just 10.5 ounces / 295 grams and is just 2.5 x 3 x 8.5 inches / 6.5 x 7.5 x 22 cm.
Kestrels have been tested in some of the harshest conditions on the planet. U.S. Special Forces, combat weather team, forest firefighters, smoke jumpers, Mt. Very few Everest Expeditions and automated pit crews rely on Kestrel to provide them with the critical environmental data they need. Watch meteorology on screen during a storm, and you’re sure to see Kestrel in action. Researchers have relied on Kestrel’s accuracy and portability for nearly 20 years, and you’ll find Kestrel referenced in many peer-reviewed journal articles. If environmental conditions matter in your favorite profession or activity, there’s no better partner than the Kestrel 5000.

1 inch|25 mm diameter impeller with precision axle and low-friction Zytel® bearings. Startup speed stated as lower limit, readings may be taken down to 0.4 m/s | 79 ft/min| 1.5 km/h | .9 mph | .8 kt after impeller startup. Off-axis accuracy -1% @ 5° off-axis; -2% @ 10°; -3% @ 15°. Calibration drift < 1% after 100 hours use at 16 MPH | 7 m/s. Replacement impeller (NK PN-0801) field installs without tools (US Patent 5,783,753). Wind speed calibration and testing should be done with triangle on impeller located at the top front face of the Kestrel. Measuring wind speeds above 60 m/s / 134.2 mph can damage the impeller. *F/S only in Ballistics units. Beaufort not available in Ballistics units. |

Airflow of 2.2 mph|1 m/s or greater provides fastest response and reduction of insolation effect. For greatest accuracy, avoid direct sunlight on the temperature sensor and prolonged sunlight exposure to the unit in low airflow conditions. Calibration drift is negligible for the life of the product. For further details, see Display & Battery Operational Temperature Limits |
Relative Humidity | ±2%RH | 0.1 %RH | 10 to 90% 25°C non-condensing | To achieve stated accuracy, unit must be permitted to equilibrate to external temperature when exposed to large, rapid temperature changes and be kept out of direct sunlight. Calibration drift is typically less than ±0.25% per year. |
Pressure | ±1.5 mbar at 25°C, 700-1100 mbar/ ±0.044inHg at 77°F 20.67-32.48 inHg/ ±0.022 PSI 10.15-15.95 PS |

Monolithic silicon piezoresistive pressure sensor with second-order temperature correction. Between 1100–1200 mbar, unit will operate with reduced accuracy. Sensor may not operate above 1200 mbar and can be damaged above 6,000 mbar or below 10 mbar. Calibration drift is negligible for the life of the product. |
